The American Museum of Science and Energy invites families to participate in AMSE Homeschool Programs, programs designed specifically with home schoolers' needs in mind. AMSE educators will lead student through interactive programs on a number of exciting topics.

Programs for Grades K - 2 ($6 non-members / $4 members)

  • Programs for Grades K - 2 take place at 10:30 am and last approximately one hour.
  • Classes are age appropriate and our K - 2 programs are not intended for children under the age of 5 years by Sept. 30, 20010.

Plant, Pollinators, and Seeds (FB) -  An investigation of the plants in the area with an emphasis on how they are pollinated and how seeds are dispersed. Seeds will be collected, analyzed, and classified. Fall only and outside access is needed.

You Are What You Eat - Students will learn about the digestive system with a 26-foot long intestine! The Food and Exercise Pyramid, vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients will be discussed. Students will see how much fat and sugar is contained in many foods. Good food choices will be discussed and students will get to make their own choices with artificial foods.

Terrific Trees (FB) - Students will learn about the trees of our area and how they are used by people.

Sensible Science - Through activities relating to the five senses, students explore how they respond to their environment. They also investigate how wild animals depend on their senses for survival and how robots use sensors to “see” where they are going.

Skins and Skulls - Students will be making comparisons of animal skulls. In addition to creating a food web, they will be exploring different types of food eaters, including herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and insectivores.

What's Your Angle? - Students will use everyday items and examples from nature to identify shapes.

Magnetism - Students do activities that teach concepts relating to magnetism.

REGISTRATION FORM (pdf) 

  • Advance reservations of one week required. No last minute reservation will be accepted.
  • Registrations are not confirmed until receipt of payment.
  • Payment may be made by cash, check, or credit card. There is a $10 minimum for credit card purchases.
  • All classes take place at AMSE except classes classes noted as being taken at Freels Bend Cabin(directions below).
  • No refunds will be given to participants not attending on their scheduled date unless reservations are cancelled at least one week in advance.
  • AMSE reserves the right to cancel a program in the event that a minimum capacity is not reached. In this event 100% of registration fees will be refunded.
  • Program fees include fee for program and admission for one student and one adult into the American Museum of Science and Energy if the program is held at the museum. Any siblings accompanying the student and parent will have to pay regular admission into the museum.

DIRECTIONS TO FREELS BEND CABIN

From Knoxville

From I-140 take the Oak Ridge exit onto Pellissippi Parkway . Pellissippi Parkway will become Oak Ridge Highway . Cross the Solway Bridge ( Clinch River ). Take the Bethel Valley Road exit. At the traffic light turn left onto Pump House Road . Veer right at the gate (which will be open) and follow the road along the lake (1.1 miles). To the left you will see a gravel road with a rusty, yellow, bar gate and a small sign that says Science Explorers Camp. Wait for someone to unlock the gate. If you miss the gate, you will run into Clark Center Park in about a mile.

From Oak Ridge

From Illinois turn onto Scarboro Road . Cross Bethel Valley Road . Scarboro Road becomes Pump House Road . Veer right at the gate (which will be open) and follow the road along the lake (1.1 miles). To the left you will see a gravel road with a yellow, bar gate and a small sign that says Freels Bend Study Center (there will be a small sign that says Science Explorers Camp). Wait for someone to unlock the gate. If you miss the gate, you will run into Clark Center Park in about a mile.
