December AMSE Calendar of Events

Dec. 1 – Jan. 13  “General Leslie R. Groves and The Manhattan Project” is a temporary exhibition about Gen. Groves and includes insight into his family, West Point graduation, leadership style, personality and achievements in overseeing the Manhattan Project through eye-catching graphics and a 10-minute documentary film.  AMSE lobby.

Dec. 1 – Jan. 6  “Be a Dinosaur: Life in the Crustaceous” is a temporary exhibition to discover the science of dinosaurs and their ecosystems as you walk in their footsteps, hunt, eat, hide and survive by using computer simulation and interactive exhibits.  Appropriate for K-8.  AMSE Second Level

Dec. 1 – Jan. 20  “DOOMTOWN” is a temporary exhibition of the atomic art of Doug Waterfield with paintings of an exploration of atomic testing phenomena and subsequent 1950’s atomic culture.  AMSE Lobby.

Dec. 7 & 14  “AMSE’s Discovery Shop 20% Discount Day” featuring 20% off regular priced merchandise for one day only, during shop hours from 10:30 am until 4:45 pm.

Dec. 7  “Homeschool Friday Program” is “Soap Science” for Grades K-2 at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 non-members and $5 AMSE members; Grades 3-6 at 12:30 pm for 2 hours with cost of $12 non-members and $9 AMSE members.  For more info and registration form go to www.amse.org   Registration deadline for this class is Nov. 30.

Dec. 7   “Movies at the Museum” featuring “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” (NR – 1953) as a result of an arctic nuclear test, a carnivorous dinosaur thaws out and starts making its way down the east coast of North America. 7 pm in AMSE Auditorium.  Movie presented by AMSE Foundation and special event sponsors Costco Wholesale, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, Premier Locations, an Authorized Agent of U.S. Cellular, and Z11 Communications.  Public invited.  No charge to visit AMSE open at 5:30 pm, including “Be A Dinosaur” virtual technology exhibition, prior to the free admission “Movies at the Museum” beginning at 7:00 pm in AMSE Auditorium.

Dec. 24 & 25  AMSE CLOSED on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Dec. 26    AMSE REOPENS on Normal Schedule – 9 am – 5 pm (Mon. – Sat.) and 1 – 5 pm (Sun.)  Discovery Shop open 10:30 am – 4:45 pm (Mon. – Sat.) and 1 – 4:45 pm (Sun.)

Dec. 28  “Movies at the Museum” featuring “Dinosaur” (PG 2000) where an orphaned dinosaur raised by lemurs joins an arduous trek to a sanctuary after a meteorite shower destroys his family home.   7 pm in AMSE Auditorium.  Movie presented by AMSE Foundation and special event sponsors Costco Wholesale, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, Premier Locations, an Authorized Agent of U. S. Cellular, and Z11 Communications.  Public invited.  No charge to visit AMSE, open at 5:30 pm., including “Be A Dinosaur” virtual technology exhibition, prior to the free admission “Movies at the Museum” beginning at 7:00 pm the AMSE Auditorium.

NOTE:  The American Museum of Science and Energy, located at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, is open Monday – Saturday from 9 am – 5 pm and Sunday 1 – 5 pm.  Admission is Adults $5, Seniors (65+) $4, Students (6-17) $3 and Children (5 and under) free. AMSE members are free.  Group rates are available for 20 or more with advance reservations.  Annual AMSE memberships, good for 12 months from purchase date, are Family $40, Grandparents $35, Individuals $25, Family & Friends $75.  AMSE members receive unlimited AMSE visits and free admission to 250 museums that participate in the ASTC Passport Program.  AMSE members also get discounts in the Discovery Shop, discounts on classes, workshops, camps and birthday parties.  For more information on AMSE memberships, exhibits, programs and events, go to www.amse.org  To schedule a group tour, call AMSE at (865) 576-3200. AMSE is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
