November AMSE Calendar of Events

Nov. 1 – Dec. 2   “General Leslie R. Groves and The Manhattan Project” is a temporary exhibition about Gen. Groves and includes insight into his family, West Point graduation, leadership style, peronality and achievements in overseeing the Manhattan Proect through eye-catching graphics and a 10-minute documentary film.  AMSE lobby.

Nov. 1 – Jan. 6  “Be a Dinosaur: Life in the Crustaceous” is a temporary exhibition to discover the science of dinosaurs and their ecosystems as you walk in their footsteps, hunt, east, hide and survive by using computer simulation and interactive exhibits.  Appropriate for K-8.  AMSE Second Level

Nov. 1 – Jan. 20  “DOOMTOWN” is a temporary exhibition of the atomic art of Doug Waterfield with paintings of an exploration of atomic testing phenomena and subsequent 1950’s atomic culture.  AMSE Lobby.

Nov. 9  “AMSE’s Discovery Shop 20% Discount Day” featuring 20% off regular priced merchandise for one day only, during shop hours from 10:30 am until 4:45 pm.

Nov. 9  “Homeschool Friday Program” is “Chemistry” for Grades K-2 at 10:30 am for one hour with cost of $7 non-members and $5 AMSE members; Grades 3-6 at 12:30 pm for 2 hours with cost of $12 non-members and $9 AMSE members.  For more info and registration form go to www.amse.org   Registration deadline for this class is Nov. 2.

Nov. 9  “Movies at the Museum” featuring “The Beginning or The End,” (1947) Manhattan Project docudrama.  7 pm in AMSE Auditorium.  Movie presented by AMSE Foundation and special event sponsors Costco, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, Premier Locations, an Authorized Agent of U.S. Cellular, and Z11 Communication.  Public invited.  No charge to visit AMSE open at 5:30 pm, including “Be A Dinosaur” virtual technology exhibition, prior to the free admission “Movies at the Museum” beginning at 7:00 pm in AMSE Auditorium.

Nov. 16  “Movies at the Museum” featuring “Jurassic Park” (1993) An age-old fantasy becomes a reality as dinosaurs are genetically re-created for the ultimate theme park in this adaptation of Michael Crichton’s best selling novel, Jurassic Park.   7 pm in AMSE Auditorium.  Movie presented by AMSE Foundation and special event sponsors Costco, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, Premier Locations, an Authorized Agent of U.S. Cellular, and Z11 Communication.  Public invited.  No charge to visit AMSE open at 5:30 p.m., including “Be A Dinosaur” virtual technology exhibition, prior to the free admission “Movies at the Museum” beginning at 7:00 pm in the AMSE auditorium.

Nov. 22  AMSE CLOSED for Thanksgiving Holiday.

Nov. 30  “Movies at the Museum” featuring “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962) A pharmaceutical company captures King Kong and brings him to Japan, where he escapes from captivity and battles a recently released Godzilla.  7 pm in AMSE Auditorium.  Movie presented by AMSE Foundation and special event sponsors Costco, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, Premier Locations, an Authorized Agent of U. S. Cellular, and Z11 Communication.  Public Invited.  No charge to visit AMSE, open at 5:30 pm., including “Be A Dinosaur” virtual technology exhibition, prior to the free admission “Movies at the Museum” beginning at 7:00 pm the AMSE Auditorium.

 

NOTE:  The American Museum of Science and Energy, located at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge, is open Monday – Saturday from 9 am – 5 pm and Sunday 1 – 5 pm.  Admission is Adults $5, Seniors (65+) $4, Students (6-17) $3 and Children (5 and under) free. AMSE members are free.  Group rates are available for 20 or more with advance reservations.  Annual AMSE memberships, good for 12 months from purchase date, are Family $40, Grandparents $35, Individuals $25, Family & Friends $75.  AMSE members receive unlimited AMSE visits and free admission to 250 museums that participate in the ASTC Passport Program.  AMSE members also get discounts in the Discovery Shop, discounts on classes, workshops, camps and birthday parties.  For more information on AMSE memberships, exhibits, programs and events, go to www.amse.org  To schedule a group tour, call AMSE at (865) 576-3200. AMSE is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
