Home School Programs

The American Museum of Science and Energy invites families to participate in AMSE Homeschool Programs, programs designed specifically with home schoolers' needs in mind. AMSE educators will lead studetn through interactive programs on a number of exciting topics.

Programs for Grades K - 3 ($6 non-members / $4 members)

  • Programs for Grades K - 3 take place at 9:00 am and 10:30 am and last approximately one hour.
  • Classes are age appropriate and our K - 3 programs are not intended for children under the age of 5 years by Sept. 30, 2008.

Programs for Grades 4 - 6 ($10 non-members / $7 members)

  • Programs for Grades 4 - 6 take place at 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm and last approximately two hours.

Habitat Hunters (@ Freels Bend)
Students will learn how to look for small animals, their signs, and their homes. Different habitats (fields, rock piles, trees, the ground, buildings, etc.) will be explored.

Insects (@ Freels Bend)
An introduction to the common order of insects, their physical characteristics, and incredible adaptability. Field activities involve collecting insects for identification and observation.
Please note this date has been changed from the 26th.

My Body and Me
Students will learn about the different body systems and how to take care of them. Hands-on activities include a life-size intestine, X-Ray photos, listening to body sounds using a stethoscope, and an anatomy puzzle.

Fun with Fossils
Learn about fossils and historical geology, identifying fossils in limestone hand specimens, and making a fossil mold. In addition to these activities, the 2-hour program includes wet sifting of fossil-laden clay from a local site.

Measuring Weighs
Students will learn the how and why of measuring (standards). They will compare the weights of various materials, including sand, rice, and beans. They will also perform tasks related to estimation and sorting.

Simple Machines
This presentation includes a discussion of energy and the types of energy and provides hands-on experimentation within inclined planes, levers, wheels, springs, and compound machines.
 
       

REGISTRATION FORM (pdf)

  • Advance reservations of one week required. No last minute reservation will be accepted.
  • Registrations are not confirmed until receipt of payment. Payment may be made by cash, check, or credit card. There is a $10 minimum for credit card purchases.
  • All classes take place at AMSE except classes classes noted as being taken at Freels Bend Cabin(direction below).
  • No refunds will be given to participants not attending on their scheduled date unless reservations are cancelled at least one week in advance.
  • AMSE reserves the right to cancel a program in the event that a minimum capacity is not reached. In this event 100% of registration fees will be refunded.
  • Program fees include fee for program and admission for one student and one adult into the American Museum of Science and Energy if the program is held at the museum. Any siblings accompanying the student and parent will have to pay regular admission into the museum.

DIRECTIONS TO FREELS BEND CABIN

From Knoxville

From I-140 take the Oak Ridge exit onto Pellissippi Parkway . Pellissippi Parkway will become Oak Ridge Highway . Cross the Solway Bridge ( Clinch River ). Take the Bethel Valley Road exit. At the traffic light turn left onto Pump House Road . Veer right at the gate (which will be open) and follow the road along the lake (1.1 miles). To the left you will see a gravel road with a rusty, yellow, bar gate and a small sign that says Science Explorers Camp. Wait for someone to unlock the gate. If you miss the gate, you will run into Clark Center Park in about a mile.

From Oak Ridge

From Illinois turn onto Scarboro Road . Cross Bethel Valley Road . Scarboro Road becomes Pump House Road . Veer right at the gate (which will be open) and follow the road along the lake (1.1 miles). To the left you will see a gravel road with a yellow, bar gate and a small sign that says Freels Bend Study Center (there will be a small sign that says Science Explorers Camp). Wait for someone to unlock the gate. If you miss the gate, you will run into Clark Center Park in about a mile.
